Flipped Ship-The research ship FLIP stands bow-up in the water off southern California, ready for its designed function as a very stable floating instrument platform for oceanographers. The craft is towed to its test area, then maneuvered from horizontal to vertical by flooding one end of its cylindrical hull. The bow contains engines, electronic equipment, and living quarters for crew of six and four scientists. The ship, 155-feet long, does not roll with surface waves when in vertical position.
