The population was 1,880 at the 2020 census. The largest community in the town is the hamlet of Schroon Lake, located at the northern end of the lake of the same name. The Town of Schroon is in the southern part of Essex County and is north of Albany. The town contains two lakes: the northern two-thirds of 9-mile-long (14 km) Schroon Lake, and 5-mile-long (8 km) Paradox Lake. The two lakes are connected by the Schroon River, a southward-flowing tributary of the Hudson River. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schroon,_New_York__________________________ GeographyThe southern line of Schroon is the border of Warren County. Schroon Lake (the water body) lies in both Essex and Warren counties. The Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87) passes through the center of the town of Schroon. Access is from Exits 27 and 28. US Route 9 runs parallel to the Interstate. New York State Route 74, an east–west highway, intersects US-9 and the Interstate at Exit 28, west of Severance. The Schroon River flows into the town across the northern town line and flows out across the southern town line towards the Hudson River. In the town, there are many state hiking trails, some leading to the Hoffman Notch Wilderness area. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schroon,_New_York__________________________ Essex County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 37,381. Its county seat is the hamlet of Elizabethtown. Its name is from the English county of Essex. Essex is one of two counties that are entirely within the Adirondack Park, the other being Hamilton County. The county is part of the North Country region of the state. GeographyEssex County is the second-largest county in New York by land area and third-largest by total area. Essex County is in the northeastern part of New York state, just west of Vermont along the eastern boundary of the state. The eastern boundary of Essex County is Lake Champlain, which serves as the New York – Vermont border. The Ausable River forms a partial northern boundary for the county. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essex_County,_New_York__________________________ The Adirondack Park (New York State Park) was created in 1892 by the State of New York amid concerns for the water and timber resources of the region. Today the Park is the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States, greater in size than Yellowstone, Everglades, Glacier, and Grand Canyon National Park combined.Adirondack Park Land Use and Development Plan Map - click to see larger map The boundary of the Park encompasses approximately 6 million acres, nearly half of which belongs to all the people of New York State and is constitutionally protected to remain “forever wild” forest preserve. The remaining half of the Park is private land which includes towns, farms, timber lands, businesses, homes, and camps. The Adirondack Park boasts over 3,000 lakes, 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, and a wide variety of habitats, including globally unique wetland types and old growth forests. The heart of the Adirondack Park is the Forest Preserve, which was created when Article XIV of the New York State Constitution was signed into law in 1885. The state of New York owns approximately 44 percent, or roughly 2.6 million acres of land within the Park’s boundaries. The remaining private lands are devoted principally to forestry, agriculture, and open space recreation. The Adirondack Park is unique in its intricate mixture of public and private lands. About 123,000 people live there year round in its 101 towns and villages. This blend of private and public lands give the Adirondacks a diversity found nowhere else – a diversity of open space and recreational lands, of wildlife and flora, of mountains and meadows, and people of all walks of life. https://apa.ny.gov/about_park/index.html__________________________ 1962 Boats & Dock, Schroon Lake, I-87 / US Highway 9 Essex County New York NY VTG Vintage Postcard Posted
