Striking 9x12" print of an exceptional Geo Ham piece depicting a scene from the 1953 Le Mans 24 Hour race. Here, the #2 Briggs Cunningham entry, a Cunningham C5-R, leads the #18 works Jaguar C-Type. British drivers Tony Holt and Duncan Hamilton would go on to claim victory, with the sister Jaguar driven by Stirling Moss and Peter Walker taking second place. The Cunningham, driven by Phil Walters and John Fitch, finished third. Geo Ham, or Georges Hamel, was a French painter and illustrator whose illustrations of airplanes and automobiles frequently appeared in the French periodical L'Illustration. In 1931, Hamel was named an Official Peintre de l'Air, a title conferred by the French Ministry of Defense on artists who have devoted themselves to air and space subjects. Even so, Ham's work beautifully captures the speed, grit, and atmosphere of the heyday of motorsports. About the Print This print is printed on a midweight, low-gloss, coated magazine stock, removed from a damaged copy of the 1957 ACO magazine/yearbook "Cinquentenaire" issue, which celebrated the club's 50th anniversary (1906-1956). The Automobile Club de l'Ouest is France's largest automotive group, and the organizer of the annual Le Mans 24 Hour race. Original vintage print would look great framed. Print is in good vintage condition, with clean, sharp edges and corners, and a bright, clean surface. There is about a three-inch stress crease noticeable at low light angles, and several soft handling dimples on the page. These imperfections are not pronounced when viewing from normal angles, and the print would look wonderful framed and matted. Page measures approximately 9.25" x 12.25" (26 x 32cm).
