Description: The Lincoln cent is the first US coin to ever feature an actual person on it. 1909 was marking 100 years since Abraham Lincoln's birth, which created a high public demand for a Lincoln coin. President Roosevelt was happy to oblige. There was a very high demand for these cents in the first couple of days, which led to rationing and them going for as high as 25 cents per the new penny in the secondary markets. The first 1909 run of the Lincoln penny featured "V. D. B" on the reverse, standing for Victor David Brenner, the designer of the coin. This immediately became a source of controversy, some claiming it was a type of advertising, and the initials were quickly replaced with a "B." Only 484,000 coins with the initials were struck, making them the rarest Lincoln cents. They're usually referred to as 1909-S VDB. Copper and tin this cent is made of became expensive and in short supply by the time the US entered WWII. As a result, in 1942, the Mint began experimenting with other materials for the Lincoln cent, including metals, plastic, fiber, and even tempered glass. Eventually, the choice was made in favor of low-grade carbon steel with a zinc coating.
