Description: Incredible piece of Black Americana. Fantastic 85+ year old sign. Discovered in Massachusetts during a house sale. It was found nailed to the wall above a doorway to an extension in the barn. According to the owners, this was where the "help" went to unwind after hours during the Depression. An amazing survivor and relic from another time. Likely there was nowhere safe or proper for the isolated black employees to hang out in the predominantly white rural country community, and this was perhaps the farm owner's practical solution to an obvious need: A well hidden private club where the workers were free to unwind. An historically important piece. Single pine board. Original paint with excellent untouched surface patina. I particularly like how the letters weren't exactly spaced evenly. A unique opportunity to own this rare museum quality sign. SIZE: 33 1/2" x 5 1/2" CONDITION: Overall great. Untouched weathered surfaces with expected aging and wear. As-is. Please use photos and description to determine condition.
