1926 Marvin 18ct gold Sector dial watch, Art Deco Roman enamel bezel, serviced

Description: Here we have a beautiful example of Art Deco gents dress watch, dating to 1926. It is an 18ct gold cased Marvin watch with outstanding enamel work to the bezel and top of the lugs. It has a silver sector dial, with stylised Arabic numerals and sub-second subsidiary dial. The thermally blued cathedral style hands shine in the light. To the right is the dimpled crown. It has a hinged case back, with British hallmarking from Glasgow assay office to the inside for 18ct gold. It is powered by a Marvin 15 jewel Swiss lever movement, which has been recently serviced. The dial is a simple silver tone with a matte textured finish. It is a sector dial design with the central circle and in-set subsidiary seconds track. The outside of the dial has a classic railroad track in black. The Arabic numerals are in a stylised Italic font which catches the eye. The sub-second dial has 10 second Arabic markers, with individual second graduations. The hands are of a gothic cathedral style with the bright thermally blued finish. This catches the light and shines a beautiful electric blue. The sub-second hand is original with the lollipop counterbalance. The case is original a gents watch, but by modern standards it is considered a mid-size watch. It measures 29mm x 29.5mm, with a width of 31.75mm with the dimpled crown. It has a lug width of 17mm, which allows a well sized strap to hold the watch on the wrist. It is a comfortable and compact wear, with its slim depth of 7.25mm.It is a three-piece case design, formed of 18ct yellow gold. It has a snap-on bezel, with a thin centre piece and a hinged case back. The bezel has the original deep blue enamel work. It is a Roman design of alternating quadrants, with the laurel wreath and geometric pattern. The pattern also extends on to the top of the lugs. The centre of the case is wafer thin, with the lugs having little curvature. They are a fixed bar design which is in good, un-bent condition. To the right, the original dimpled crown is a lovely touch, which is rare to have survived this long. You can immediately tell its importance in tying together the design, adding a subtle element of luxury.The hinged case back seals tightly. Inside the case has British hallmarking from Glasgow assay office for 18ct gold.The date letter is somewhat rubbed. It appears to be the letter ‘d’ which dates the watch to 1926. It has the rubbed mark ‘JW’ which is James Weirs mark, who were a jewellers and silversmiths at Buchanan Street, Glasgow. It has the Poincon De Maitre 105 for Les Fils de Jules Blum. They are well known for providing cases to many IWC dress watches with Cal 89 and 83 movements. They specialised in classic dress cases with unique lug designs. The movement is a Marvin Swiss lever calibre from the 1920s. It is a manually wound movement, with a jewel count of 15 and a frequency of 18,000 BPH. It is marked as adjusted to 3 positions, as well as having a Breguet hairspring. The movement has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within +70 seconds deviation a day. This is an unusual example of enamelled Art Deco dress watch design, in a conventional circular case. We have not seen another and we doubt we ever will. Full condition report below. It has a clear railroad track and stylised Arabic numerals. The sub-second dial is good and clear. There are some slightly lighter areas. Hands: The Gothic Cathedral style hands are original and are in good condition. They have a good thermally blued finish which shines in the light. They are free of bending. Glass: The crystal is a modern replacement which is in good condition with no marking. Crown: The dimpled crown is original. It is gold plated and has some wear to the plate. Case: The case is 18ct gold and is in good condition to the front and sides. The bezel and top of the lugs have the original blue enamel in-fill which is good. The bezel and sides have light surface scratching. The lugs are thin but un-bent, with good original fix gold bar lugs. Caseback:The 18ct gold hinged case back is in decent condition. The hinge is good, and it closes tightly. It has the original polished finish, with light surface scratching. It has some dimpled denting to the centre. Inside it has the original UK assay office marking which is somewhat rubbed. Strap: The watch comes on a new genuine leather strap for fixed bar lugs. It has a gold plated, non-original buckle. Movement: The movement is a Marvin Swiss lever calibre from the 1920s. It is a manually wound movement, with a jewel count of 15 and a frequency of 18,000 BPH. It is marked as adjusted to 3 positions. The movement has been recently serviced. It’s keeping time to within +70 seconds deviation a day, with an amplitude of 330 degrees and a beat error of 0.8m/s.
