Description: This listing is for an original 1903 hand-written and hand-signed letter from Henrietta Szold, the founder of Hadassah, to the Jewish-America jurist, Judge Mayer Sulzberger. She wrote this 9 years before founding Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America. A full transcript of this letter is at the bottom of the description. Szold writes about an upcoming book on Maimonides that the Jewish Publication Society will be publishing while comparing it to a previously published book on Simon Dubnow, the Jewish historian, activist, and writer. Szold mentions having enclosed samples of other styles for which Judge Sulzberger is asked to comment on and return to her. This measures approximately 6" x 9 1/2" on folded letterhead from the Jewish Publication Society of America. Henrietta Szold wrote the letter in Baltimore, Maryland and dated in March 4, 1903. There is a small 3/8" tear at the bottom and fold lines from this having been originally mailed folded up in an envelope. The bottom left corner has a small crease. Please see the photos for more detail. On the back of the letter it is dated again March 4, 1903 with Henrietta Szold's name and separately the "#13" has been written in pencil in a circle. Mayer Sulzberger1303 Girard AvenuePhiladelphia, PA Dear Judge Sulzberger: Practically all the text of the Maimonides book has arrived, and Mr. Abrahams promises the illustrations shortly. You may remember that the Committee ordered the Maimonides book to be printed in the same type and style as the Dubnow book. At that time Dubnow was not finished. Although the members of the Committee did not express dissatisfaction with Dubnow as printed, I do not myself like its appearance. I spoke to the printer about it, and he thinks that what I attribute to poor electrotyping and poor press-work is due to the modern face type. I am enclosing a sheet of our book, and also a specimen sheet of another style of type. Our page - for I should have the size of the type page like that in Dubnow - requires one line less. The new page would contain 165 words as against our 150, and the Maimonides book would make 230 pages as against 200 pages of the Dubnow book, the Maimonides book containing about six thousand words more than the other, and requiring an index. Please mark your preference on the enclosed sheets, and return them to me at your earliest convenience. Very truly yours,Henrietta Szold.
