(5.5 x 4.5 inches or 14 x 11.4 cm), with a gilt top to the pages. The "Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám" is a collection of verses or quatrains (rubaiyat) attributed to the Persian mathematician, astronomer, and poet Omar Khayyám. The Rubáiyát is known for its philosophical and mystical themes and its exploration of the nature of life, love, mortality, and the human condition. The Rubáiyát gained significant popularity in the Western world during the 19th century after being translated into English by the scholar Edward FitzGerald. FitzGerald's translation, first published in 1859, presented a loose and interpretive rendering of Khayyám's verses. It captured the essence of the original Persian poetry and resonated with the Victorian fascination with exoticism, romanticism, and existential themes. The illustrator, Herbert Cole (1867-1930) illustrated many books and was highly influenced by Walter Crane and William Morris. This book is an overall neat and clean copy for its age, being over 120 years old, and the pages are predominantly uncreased. It is bound in green limp leather, over boards, with gilt lettering and decorations on the spine and front. The boards and spine are intact and robust. However, there is a little wear, which includes patches of rubbing to the leather, more-so at the edges, light scratches, very soft bumping to the corners and a small dent in the leather at the bottom of the front cover. Please see the photographs provided for further reference. Inside, the pages are lightly tanned, which is consistent for a book of this age. There is darker tanning on the half-title page and the last page of text. There is very light foxing on the endpapers. Besides this, the pages are in an overall neat, predominantly uncreased, and clean state, with only light creases or very small marks on a couple of pages. Some of the edges of the pages are uneven and roughly cut, but this is highly likely due to the construction of this book and is all part of its beautiful history. The page leaves were probably uncut and then severed with a pen knife. There are no rips to the main pages, but there are very small rips in between the front pastedown and front free endpaper. On the front pastedown and on the title page there is a pen and pencil inscriptions, but there are no further pen or pencil marks inside this book. Most of the pages are tightly bound and there is just a light crack in the gutter between a few pages. However, all the pages are all secure. There are no missing pages, and so all 68 pages are present, plus 4 pages at the rear containing the publisher’s catalogue, including details on the ‘Flowers of Parnassus’ series. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. This is a small book and measures approximately 14 cm by 11.4 cm and 1.1 cm wide. It weighs approximately 105 grams. Thank you so much for looking.
