1885 Stunning Lindenia Orchid Folio Color Litho, MASDEVALLA PL. DLVII

Description: Stunning 1850 Hand-Printed Stone Chromolithograph from: LINDENIA ICONOGRAPHIEDES ORCHIDÉES DIRECTEUR : J. LINDEN PL. DLVII MASDEVALLIA X HENRIETTAE KRANZEL. This large, lavish Orchid lithograph originates from Jean Linden's (1817-1898) Lindenia Iconographia des Orchidées.It's one of the most interesting, lyrical, gorgeous of the set, hence it's the only one of the 800 plates of orchids in this massive, 17-volume set. It's dramatic, brilliantly colored, striking, large, with a composition that's balanced & graphically fascinating. This would make wonderful, brilliant wall-art when framed. This one is very scarce. The Volumes:Lindenia Iconographia des Orchidées (French for Iconography of Orchids) was published in Belgium in 17 volumes between 1885-1901. Ultimately the complete set contained 800 numbered chromolithographed plates on 788 sheets by P. de Pannemaeker, G. Severeyns and J. Goffart after P. de Pannemaeker, A. Goussens, J. de Bosschere, G. Putzys and others. The work is remarkable for the level of color-printing craftmanship displayed by the Belgian lithographer Pieter De Pannemaker. The Author:Jean Linden (1817-1898), was a Belgian botanist, explorer, horticulturist and businessman. He specialised in orchids, which he wrote a number of books about. A native of Luxembourg, he moved to Belgium in his youth and during his working life became a famed 'Orchid Hunter'. He was responsible for the importation of over 1100 different orchid species. He was the first to search the mountain regions diligently for his orchids. In so doing, he was able to obtain many cool-temperature plants for his sponsors in Belgium. After ten years in the western hemisphere, Linden returned to work in Brussels in 1845, where with his son, Lucien, he founded Horticulture Internationale. The Plates:Lithography was first invented in 1796 in Germany, and came to the United States about 1819. Lithographs were created by drawing an image onto a smooth stone, usually limestone, treated with chemicals, and then printed on paper. “Lithography, as we understand it today, is the art of printing from a perfectly flat stone, on which the pattern is neither raised in relief nor cut in intaglio. The lithographic stone, which is an amorphous limestone, dense in texture whitout being hard, …[and] has a great affinity for fat. … The drawing on the stone is made with the lithographic crayon, consisting of soap, wax and lampblack, … The drawing, when finished, undergoes an operation called technically ‘the preparation.’ It consists in flowing over the face of the stone the gum Arabic solution acidulated with nitric acid. The acid neutralizes the alkali of the soup in the crayon and ink, sets the fat free, and in doing so creates a permanent union of this fat with the stone by forming lime soap, insoluble in water.” (New York Tribune) This print was printed from stone by hand from multiple stones, & often these were finished by hand with additional watercolor. Condition:Appears to be in very good condition for a print this old. Typical age-toning & character for a print this old. Overall looks to me to be a clean copy with the typical character for a plate of this age. Please peruse the detailed photos. These prints are very old & may have minor imperfections expected with age, such as some typical age-toning of the paper, oxidation of the old original watercolors, spots, text-offsetting, artifacts from having been bound into a book, etc. Please examine the photos & details carefully.Text Page(s): This one comes with original text page(s). I've added a scan of a sample cover page from one of the volumes of the series to the listing photos for reference, they're not part of the listing. About this beautiful plant:Masdevallia is a genus of flowering plants of the Pleurothallidinae, a subtribe of the orchid family (Orchidaceae). The genus is named for Jose Masdevall (?-1801), a physician and botanist in the court of Charles III of Spain.Masdevallia Henrietta is an orchid hybrid originated by O.Ames in 1893. It is a cross of Masd. caudata x Masd. ignea. It is considered a "primary hybrid" because it is a cross between two species. Size: 14-1/2" x 11" approximately.Shipping: Multiple prints combine into one USPS Flat-Rate envelope.
