Description: Carte-de-visite photograph of a child in a toy rocking chair, by Manley Gaylord of Medina, New York, circa late 1860s to early 1870s. The unidentified full seated portrait view shows a toddler in a long white gown seated in a fancy Victorian rocking chair with a tray and bells. A couple of low turned posts rise up from the tray, and there look to be bells or rattles tied to a string between them. The unusual rocker reminds me of later high chairs and convertible rockers with tray and toys. I think someone put ink dots in the eyes, giving the child more of a surprised look. Manley Gaylord (1838-1895) gave his occupation as Artist in 1865 and was still living with his parents in Concord, New York. He married soon after this and settled his family in Medina, where he was living in 1870, giving his occupation as Daguerrian in the census of that year. He was still there in 1875, occupation Photographer. The carte-de-visite is in good or better condition with minimal wear and soiling. Note the light bumping at the corners of the card. The photograph exhibits good or better tonal range and shows good or better detail. A nice image of a child in an unusual Victorian play rocker!
