1850's GOLD RUSH CLOTHING BUTTON RESEMBLING A TYPE 3 ONE DOLLAR GOLD PIECE

Description: This is a very interesting & rarely encountered original circa 1850's or so clothing button made to resemble an Indian Head type 3 one dollar gold piece. The front of the button, which is made of gilt brass, simulates the obverse of the gold coin. The back of the button which is made of tin has no design. The design that this button was inspired by was the U.S. issue of the Indian Head Type one dollar gold (large head version type 3) which was produced from 1856-1889. The front gilt brass Indian head shows some wear & scratches & a few smooth pushed in areas. This would grade out around VF wear-wise if it were a coin. The back tin insert has some dark age toning, oxidation & slight surface rust. The diameter is 5/8 inch. This button is of a very rare type which have been said to have been used on clothing worn by gold miners during the American gold rush. We have been aware of the existence of this type of clothing button for many years. Also, being interested in buttons of all sorts for over 55 years we have looked for them for many years. We have only heard of a very few others of this rare type of button in collections. This example comes out of our collection & it is the one & only example that we have ever personally owned.
