Description: Letter written from Boston, MA by Field & Converse to Messrs. S. & E. [Sylvester & Edward] Morris, in Norwich, VT, January 5, 1847. In 1832 James W. Converse (b. 11 Jan 1808, Thompson, CT; d. 26 Aug 1894, Boston, MA) and Isaac Field (b. 19 March 1793; 12 Oct 1850, Dorchester, MA) formed the partnership Field & Converse. In 1837 Isaac Field left, and his brother John Field (no definitive record has yet been found), who was clerk for them, succeeded him. It was the largest commission leather house in Boston. Sylvester Morris (b. 23 Sept 1797, Stafford, CT; d. 12 Sept 1886, probably in Norwich, VT). Edward Morris was the brother of Sylvester Morris. Joseph B. Whall (b. 1820, Boston, MA; d. 11Nov 1858, Boston, MA). Joseph B. Whall had been a junior partner in the firm of Levi A. Dowley (b. 8 Jan 1803, Worcester, MA [Death record states that he was born in Wardsboro, VT.]; d. 26 Oct 1881, Woodlan Park, MA) and was taken into the concern of Field, Converse & Co. at around the time this letter was written.
