It was struck at Warsaw and dated 1844 during the reign of the Czar Nicholas I. He was Emperor of Russia, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Finland from December 1, 1825 until his death in March of 1855 during the Crimean War. After Napoleon’s “Duchy of Warsaw” ceased to exist as the Russian and Prussian armies chased Napoleon back to Paris after his failed Russian invasion, the “Congress of Vienna” made Poland a Kingdom and gave it to Russia. Nicholas I was the only Russian monarch ever actually crowned “King of Poland” although not the only one to be bestowed with the title.
