Description: FOR the complete story, FULL DETAILS and BIG CLEAR PICTURES, Please SEE THE DESCRIPTION 1839 GREAT BRITAIN Silver "ONE SHILLING" Queen VICTORIA >No WW Scarce EARLY DATE Description This is a veteran but still nice, sterling silver "Shilling" from Great Britain. The second of two types for the year, it was struck in 1839 at the Royal mint in London early in the reign of Queen Victoria. The portraits on the "Shillings" of Victoria are interesting. They began with the "Young Head" here and this design lasted with minor adjustments from 1838 until the "Jubilee Head", with its small crown, was introduced in 1887. Finally, the "Veiled" or "Old Head" type was introduced in 1893. There are many different minor varieties to collect as well. For instance, this is just the 2nd year Victoria Shillings were produced but it is the third distinct obverse. The first year had a slightly smaller head and the letters WW on the truncation of the bust for the designer, William Wyon. The second type had this slightly larger bust of Victoria and still had the letters. This third obverse has the same bust but with no designer's initials. This design lasted until 1867 when they lowered the relief of the portrait. Weight: 5.57 Grams, 24 Millimeters, .925 Silver. Mintage: Divided between Type 2 & 3. "Standard Catalog of World Coins" (1801-1900) by Krause-Mishler. #734.1. "Standard Catalog of English and UK Coins" by Coincraft. #VYSH-030. Obverse: VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D: • Victoria, by the grace of God, Queen of all the British Territories and Defender of the Faith. • Designed by William Wyon. Reverse: ONE • SHILLING • 1839 • Crown and wreath. • Designed by Johann Baptiste Merlen. The Coin: A veteran, it saw some hands and earned the wear and marks it displays. Like so many old silver coins, one of the hands it passed through cleaned it at some time long ago. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
