Description: This rare journal is a collection of witty, cleverly written and imaginative musings from friends and suitors to a young Southern belle named Catherine Barnes of the Oaken Grove Plantation in Mississippi. ( This could possibly be the Oak Grove Plantation near Church Hill,MS?) Through these observations and romantic overtures ,this journal provides a beautiful insight into plantation life in antebellum Mississippi. ( c.1830's) The initial opening letters to Catherine are dated April 14th 1833 Port Gibson,Mississippi; initialed D.H.H. followed by the "Land of the Blist or Bliss" on the same date in Port Gibson,MS by the same writer. There is a page where the author laments about a flower with the remnants of that same flower he speaks of...signed H.S.N. The journal also contains another dried flower seemingly from the plantation, near the opening plate opposite the tissue guard. The journal contains several illustration plates of the once sublime Weehawken meadows, on the Jersey shore of the Hudson, opposite the northern part of the city of New York.
