The 'Waverley' novels were some of the most popular and widely read novels of the time when they were published, increasing Scott's reputation to become one of the most recognisable literary names of the Georgian era. 'Waverley', the first novel in the series, was Scott's first adventure into historical literature, and has been widely acknowledged as one of the first pieces of historical fiction. CONDITION Uniformly bound in half calf with marbled boards. Externally, sound, with slight rubbing, mainly to the joints and extremities, with slight wear to the head and tail of the spine. Light marks to boards and leather. Hinges are strained but holding, with the exception of the front hinge of volume XLI, which is holding on by one cord and may detach with further handling. Joints cracked to volumes I, II, III, IV, VII, VIII, IX, XII, XIV, XV, XVI, XVII, XIX, XXVI, XXIX, XXXI, XXXIII, XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXV, XXXVII, XLVI, XLVIII. Rubbing causing slight loss to spine to volumes IX, XI, XVI, XXIII, XXV, XXVI, XXVII, XXVIII, XXXVI, XL, XLV and XLVIII. More significant loss to the tail of the spine to volumes XXXIII and XXV. Glue repair to front joint of XXXV. Glue repair to XLVIII causing front free endpaper to stick to front paste down. Backstrip detached from rear joint to volume IX. Loss to backstrip with glue repair to volume XXXIX. Horizontal tear across backstrip to volumes XLII and XLV. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the occasional spotting, heavier to frontispiece and title page. Page after title is loosening to volume XXI. Frontispiece and title page loosening to volume XXX.
