Description: I have here for sale 2 books entitled THE SECOND TOUR OF DR SYNTAX In Search of Consolation; and THE THIRD TOUR OF DR SYNTAX In Search of a Wife by William Combe. They are Vols II and III of a 3 volume set featuring the title character Dr Syntax who was a satirical character based on William Gilpin and his Search for the Picturesque as well as many 18th- and early 19th-century writers whose ‘Tours,’ ‘Travels,’ and ‘Journeys’ were vehicles for sententious moralizing, uninspired raptures, and sentimental accounts of amorous adventures! The books are beautifully and amusingly illustrated by Thomas Rowlandson with 24 colour plates in each volume, so a total of 48 plus colour vignettes to the title pages. Some b/w illustrations in the text also. They are both Third Editions published by R Ackerman's Library of Arts, London in 1820 (dates taken from the plates). Bound in half black leather on green cloth hardboards. Spines have 5 gilt raised bands, gilt motifs and lettering. The rear board of Vol II is loose and almost detached, together with six pages attached to it. A few scuffs to the leather on the spines but apart from that the boards are in very good condition. Blue and gilt marbled endpapers. Pages clean but a little sunned. Gilt top edge. Small inscription to the flyleaf on Vol III. Binding firm. Vol II - 277 pages + plates, Vol III - 279 pages. 25 x 16 cm.
