This rare copperplate engraved print, with original hand color, is printed on very fine quality woven paper. It is from "the Botanical Magazine" or "Flower Garden Displayed" edited by William Curtis (1746-1799) beginning in 1787, (Vols. 1 - 13). After William Curtis' death in 1799, the subsequent editors of the publication included John Sims Vols. 14-53, from 1800-1826; William Jackson Hooker (1827-1865), and Joseph Dalton Hooker (1865-1904). Sydenham Teak Edwards, the great botanical artist, executed many of the early Curtis illustrations and later published his own "The Botanical Register" from 1815 through 1847. A contemporary of Edwards, Robert Sweet, published his own "The British Flower Garden," "Geraniceae" (Geraniums) and other publications in a similar format and size. For this reason, the paper size, plate mark and quality of the publications of all three men is very close, and prints from each series can be grouped together to make a stunning display of art. One edge is slightly uneven where the prints was attached to the book; but this will not affect framing. Original descriptive text, when available, is included. Each single print measures approximately 5-l/2 inches by 9 inches. Each fold-out double print measures approximately 9 inches by 10-l/2 inches.
