Description: M’Fingal: An Epic Poem. In Four Cantos. By John Trumbull and printed in Philadelphia by Mathew Carey. 1791, 95 pp, 6.75” x 4.25”, 8vo, hardcover full leather. In good condition, with rubbing and wear to edges and corners of boards and spine. Light loss to head and heel of spine. Hinges remain in good condition with minor wear and text block remains bound well. Light staining to edges of some pages. Small inscription at front. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce early Philadelphia imprint by Mathew Carey (1760-1839) who had taken his printing ventures from Ireland and emigrated to the city several years prior with the support of Benjamin Franklin. Inscribed with “S. Strong” on title page, which may be a reference to Sarah Strong, the wife of Caleb Strong (1745-1819), a Massachusetts Founding Father who served as Governor of Massachusetts and as a senator. The Strongs would have been in Philadelphia at the time of the book’s printing, as the city was serving as the capital of the United States at the time. Includes page of Carey’s other books at rear. A wonderful piece of early American history. COLL1791DKLP0224-aj0958
