Store use only Rack 5, Shelf A3rd Amphibious Corps The The 5th MAC was formed on 4 September 1943 under Major General H. M. (Howling Mad) Smith. It was intended to augment the striking power of the Fifth Fleet and Centeral Pacific force under VAdm Spurance. Its first action was in the Gilbert Islands. That was followed by Tarawa, actions in the area of Kwajalein, the Mariania chain including Saipan and Guam, followed by Iwo Jima. These are outstanding reproductions of the shoulder patches worn Marines who served in the Pacific during World War II. They were worn on the green wool service uniform and overcoat as well as the summer tan uniform. All patches are made to the original Marine Corps specifications which began with a Letter of Instruction (LOI) No. 372 dated March 15, 1943. Incidentally, LOI 1499 dated September 23, 1947 abolished the wearing of such shoulder patches effective January 1, 1948
